[Class 74 (ii)] A superposed needle cylinder machine is provided with patterning mechanism comprising blade-like thread guides 1 arranged substantially axially of the needle cylinders and movable radially for wrapping the threads around the needles. The invention is described in connection with a rotary needle cylinder machine. The thread-guiding end 2 of each guide extends at an angle from the main portion and is laterally bent or cranked so that it is deflected by contact either with the corresponding needle or with a separate element for that purpose. The threads a may be guided from the bobbins 58 by tubes 75 having bent lower ends projecting through apertures 69a in a sleeve 69 supporting the bed 6 for the guides. In an alternative arrangement, the guiding means comprises perforated discs spaced axially within the sleeve 69. The guides are provided with butts 4 for actuation by levers or cams 8 controlled by the pins 21 of a pattern drum 20 or by a jacquard band. The guides are retracted by a cam engaging upwardly extending butts 17 on the guides, and to facilitate wrapping of the threads, the guides 1 are slightly lowered, i.e. moved axially of the cylinders, by a cam 9 engaging butts 5. The thread guides may be shogged with respect to the needles, the bed 6 being rotated by gearing including a pinion 37, Fig. 14, freely mounted upon the top cylinder driving shaft 36. The pinion 37 is driven by a reel 38 slidably keyed on the shaft 36 and having opposed stepped cams 40, 41, radially offset and engaged by rollers 42, 43, Fig. 12, on a pattern controlledsliding block 44. The reel 38 also has a projection 45 with stepped edges 45<a> to engage opposed screws 46 arranged on the underside of the pinion 37. The screws 46 are carried by a slidable bar 56 adjustable so that the amount of shogging for a predetermined movement of the block 44 can be varied. A pattern controlled cam is provided for nullifying the selective action of the pattern drum 20. The nullifying cam may be used with thread guides, half of which have long butts and the cam can be moved into two operative positions, for nullifying the patterning on all guides or for producing half round pattern effects, e.g. patterned insteps in a seamless hose machine. To ensure that guides, the patterning of which is nullified, do not wrap threads about the needles, a thread guard 91, Fig. 17, is arranged to be projected through a slot in the feeder plate 96 by mechanism connected with the nullifying cam. Alternatively, a guard in the form of a rotary disc having portions of different radii may be provided, the part of larger radius being inserted between the guides and the needles when no thread is to be wrapped about the needles.
