A three-phase A.C. motor 10 is rotated in one direction or the other to maintain its shaft in a desired angular position by means of the circuit shown, in which the terminals 11, 12, 13 of the delta-connected motor windings W1, W2, W3 are connected to the terminals 16, 18 of a single phase A.C. supply 17, the terminals 11, 12 being shunted by a resistorcapacitor circuit R1, C1 and being connected to the terminal 16 through triacs 14, 15, one or other of which is fired when rotation of the motor in a particular direction is required. The triacs 14, 15 are respectively controlled by oscillators 20, 21 whose frequency is much greater than the frequency of the supply 17. These oscillators are controlled by a signal from an amplifier 28 representative of the error between the desired and sensed shaft positions and of the speed of the motor. To this end a gear-box 24 and position sensing device 25 supply an " actual shaft position " signal to a comparator also supplied with a reference position signal 23, the output of the comparator being fed to an amplifier 26 whose output is combined with a signal from a tachogenerator 27 responsive to the motor speed, the combined signal then being fed to the amplifier 28. It is stated that the invention may be applied to a motor with star-connected windings.
