The rope clamp comprises a sleeve 10 formed with a conical bore and inside the bore is a plurality of helically extending wedges that are:- (1) grooved helically on their outer surface to clamp cable strands Sl, S3, S5 between the wedges and the sleeve; (2) so shaped as to define between them internal helical grooves in which cable strands S2, S4 and S6 are clamped; (3) so shaped internally as to provide surfaces 35 engaging and clamping the centre strand S7; and (4) so shaped internally as to engage and clamp the strands S2, S4, S6 against the centre strand S7. The strands S1 to S6 were initially six outer strands around the core S7. The wedges are of softer material than the sleeve to enable a self-waging action to take place under load. The wedges may extend beyond the sleeve 10 and the wedges could be connected together at either end by thin, bondable webs of material. The invention can be modified to grip cables made up differently to the one illustrated.
