At least the first lens group, the second lens group, and the third lens group move when zooming from the wide angle end to the telephoto end. A focal length f1 of the first lens group, a focal length f2 of the second lens group, a focal length f3 of the third lens group, a travel distance M2 of the second lens group when zooming from the wide angle end to the telephoto end, lateral magnifications &bgr;2w and &bgr;3w of the second lens group and the third lens group at the wide angle end, and lateral magnifications &bgr;2t and &bgr;3t of the second lens group and the third lens group at the telephoto end are each set appropriately.
