摘要：<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for reducing heavy metal sludge produced when an alkali is added to water to be treated containing heavy metals to remove them as their hydroxides from the water. Ž<P>SOLUTION: When the alkali is added to the water to be treated containing dissolved metals to precipitate the heavy metals as their hydroxides and to recover the sediment as the heavy metal sludge, a sodium sulfite aqueous solution is added to the water to be treated in the presence of a ferric ion to convert at least a part of the heavy metal hydroxides to their oxides.
