A collet for machine-tools comprises a number of rigid jaws 10, Fig. 3, spaced apart around the axis of the collet by resilient members 9 to define a parallel bore 13, Fig. 4, a part 17 of the outer face 11 of each jaw lying on an imaginary cone whereby the diameter of the bore can be varied over a range of at least one-eighth of an inch by movement of the collet in a conical bore, e.g. of a chuck. The angle subtended by the part 17 at the axis of the collet is greater at the larger diameter end of the collet, whereby the bore 13 remains substantially parallel throughout the range of adjustment. The members 9 are C-shaped and are slid into grooves 21 from the smaller end of the collet, and spring rings 23, 231 in grooves 24 hold the jaws and springs assembled. Ring 231 forms an abutment for the ends of the springs 9 to lock them in the grooves.
