摘要：<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the condition of occupants regardless of the movement of the occupants. <P>SOLUTION: This occupant detection apparatus includes an IR camera 1 that captures a temperature distribution inside a vehicle compartment as thermal image information, and a microcomputer 2 that extracts movement information showing changes in the thermal image information obtained by the IR camera 1; extracts reference area information by combining the extracted pieces of movement information showing different states of temperature changes; creates a reference area template for the calculation of temperature on the basis of the extracted reference area information; detects occupant information on the basis of the reference area template while using the thermal image information; implements a process for adding the obtained reference area information to the previously created reference area template when the amount of movement information extracted is less than a predetermined amount; and sets the obtained reference area information as a new reference area template when the amount of the movement information is equal to or greater than the predetermined amount. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
