In order to prevent jamming in the closed position of hydraulically operated, remotely controlled gate valves, e.g. valves in oil tanker ships, arrangements are made for the operating liquid supplied to the jacks of the valves to be at a lower pressure for closing the valves than that supplied for opening them. In an embodiment, two gate valves 1, actuated by jacks 4, are controlled by respective, remote valves 48 fed by a conduit 22 from a common source of pressure liquid and also by a conduit 51 connected to the source through a pressure reducing valve 50. The left-hand valve 48 is shown positioned to connect the lower side of the jack of the lefthand valve 1 to the conduit 22 and the upper side to exhaust 137 for opening the valve whilst the other valve 48 is shown positioned to connect the upper side of the jack of the other valve 1 to the reduced pressure conduit 51 for closing the valve, the lower side of the jack being connected to the exhaust 137. Rotary valves 61 are provided for interrupting the connections between the valves 48 and the jacks and connecting the latter to hand pumps for manual operation of the valves 1. The valves 48, which have spring plungers 58 to locate them in either of their two positions, may be modified to have an intermediate position so that the valves 1 can be brought to rest at any position, and in this case position indicators operated by pistons displaced by fluid exhausted from the jacks are provided. The valves 48 shown are associated with indicators 39 which have plungers 43 raised only when fluid is being exhausted from the jacks. These indicators may be mounted in the valve housings which may be constructed so that a number of housings can be joined together. A pressure regulator 50 may be interposed between each valve 48 and its jack instead of the single valve 50 on the supply side of the valves 48. The pressure source employs electrically driven pumps 10 and accumulators 15 &c.</p>
