摘要:<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical deflecting element, an optical deflector, and an image display device giving an image of high definition, which use a liquid crystal as a double refraction medium and easily control the extent of deflection with a high precision by controlling the tilt angle of the liquid crystal. <P>SOLUTION: A liquid crystal layer is used to constitute a polarization plane rotating means 2 in the optical deflecting element. A double refraction medium 3 has a crystal 30 which is interposed between a pair of transparent substrates 31 and is oriented with the major axis of molecules inclined atθto substrate surfaces. An oriented film 32 is formed on at least one side of the liquid crystal layer consisting of the liquid crystal 30 and controls the direction of liquid crystal orientation. A pair of electrodes are provided on both sides of the liquid crystal layer, and an electric field is applied to the liquid crystal to change the tilt angle of the liquid crystal, thus controlling the extent of light deflection. The optical deflecting element is used to realize the optical deflector capable of controlling the extent of deflection with a high precision and the image display device capable of displaying an image of high definition. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO</p>
