Catalytic processes and apparatus.-In the production of ammonia from a mixture of nitrogen and hydrogen circulated in a cycle through a single catalytic converter, part of the ammonia is first removed at one point and a further part is removed at a second point beyond the pump and the inlet for the fresh gases, this portion taking with it impurities introduced by these gases and from the lubricating oil in the pump. In the system shown in Fig. 1, the gases issuing from the reaction chamber 1 are passed through a first condenser 4 whereby part of the ammonia in a pure condition is accumulated in a receptacle 5. The residual gases pass through the circulating pump 6, on either side of which is an inlet 7 for fresh gases, and thence to a second condenser 8 and liquid ammonia receptacle 9 and back to the reaction chamber. In a modification a heat exchanger is arranged in the paths of the gases from the pump to the second condenser and from the second condenser to the reaction chamber.
