摘要:PURPOSE: A variable optical attenuator is provided to reduce the cost compared to a conventional optical attenuator since it employs an optical fiber having an eccentric core and to improve a reverse reflection since it slantly polished the cross-section of an opposing optical fiber holder. CONSTITUTION: A variable optical attenuator includes the first optical fiber holder(11) one cross-section of which is mirror-polished. The second optical fiber holder(13) is separated from/opposite against the polished surface of the first optical fiber holder(11) and an opposite face of the second optical fiber holder(13) against the first optical fiber holder(11) is rotatable/mirror-polished. The first optical fiber is inserted into the first optical fiber holder(11) so that the center of the first optical fiber can coincide with the central axis(15) of the first and second optical fiber holders(11,13) and has the first optical fiber core(17a) that is eccentric from the central axis(15) of the first optical fiber holder(11) by several-several tens of micrometers. The cross-section of the first optical fiber is mirror-polished. The second optical fiber(21) is inserted into the second optical fiber holder(13) so that the center of the second optical fiber(21) can coincide with the central axis(15) of the first and second optical fiber holders(11,13) and has the second optical fiber core(21a) that is eccentric from the central axis(15) of the second optical fiber holder(13) by several-several tens of micrometers. The cross-section of the second optical fiber(21) is mirror-polished. An exterior alignment sleeve(25) surrounds the first and second optical fiber holders(11,13) in order to align them and is fixed to the first optical fiber holder(11).
