摘要:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new naphthalene compound useful as a component of a liquid crystal composition for a liquid crystal displaying element, etc., and having a large spontaneous polarization and a small viscosity. SOLUTION: This new naphthalene compound is represented by formula I [R1 and R2 are each a 2-24C alkyl; X is CH2 O or COO; Y and Z are each a single bond, an ether bond or an ester bond; (l) and (m) are 0 or 1; (*) represent an asymmetric carbon], e.g. a compound of formula II. The compound of formula I is obtained by heating a cyanonaphthalene derivative of formula III with a 2-aminoalcohol of formula IV in the presence of cadmium acetate in a solvent such as toluene. The compound of formula I has a compatibility with a non-optically active liquid crystal composition, keeps a wide chiral smectic C phase and provides a liquid crystal composition excellent in characteristics such as an uniform orientation, a rapid responsibility and a tilting angle.
