摘要:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce an imide polymer which can form a liquid crystal alignment film having excellent aligning characteristics and which can give liquid crystal displays shortened in the time taken for residual image extinction by reacting a specified tetracarboxylic dianhydride with a specified diamine compound. SOLUTION: 1,3-Divinylbenzene and/or 1,4-divinylbenzene and maleic anhydride are subjected to the Diels-Alder reaction at 80-150 deg.C to obtain a tetracarboxylic dianhydride. A tetracarboxylic dianhydride containing 0.1-100mol% obtained dianhydride is reacted with a diamine compound represented by the formula: H2 N-R<1> -NH2 (wherein R<1> is a divalent organic group) in such a ratio that 0.2-2.0 equivalents of the acid anhydride groups of the tetracarboxylic dianhydride are present per equivalent of the amino groups of the diamine compound at 0-150 deg.C in an organic solvent to obtain a polyamic acid. This acid is cyclized through dehydration at 0-180 deg.C in the presence of a dehydrating agent and a dehydrative cyclization catalyst in an organic solvent to obtain an imide polymer.
