CONSTITUTION:When a user sets a Roman character input mode, operates an English character key and inputs a character string, a central processing unit 101 converts an English character string into a HIRAGANA (cursive form of Japanese syllabary) character string by using a Roman character/HIRAGANA conversion dictionary 102C. Subsequently, the central processing unit 101 performs a conversion from the HIRAGANA character string to a KANJI (Chinese character) word in accordance with the KANJI conversion instruction from a keyboard 103. When a KATAKANA conversion key 103A is operated in the Roman character input mode, the Roman character input is treated as the input of the English character string, and the central processing unit 10 refers to an adoped word dictionary 102B and converts the input into a corresponded KATAKANA word. In this case, the central processing unit 10 performs a processing converting into a small letter or the reverse processing when the optimization of the English character string or the existence of a capital letter in the inputted English character string, for instance, is detected before the conversion.
