In a system for electromagnetically locking and unlocking all the doors of a vehicle, each door has a pivoting member 16, Fig. 4, which is connected by a link 15 to a control member 1, the latter comprising a coil 5, Fig. 2, which is mounted on a shaft 7 so as to be movable between discs 2, 3 having an axial magnetisation. All the coils 5 are connected in parallel to at least one reversing switch 33, Fig. 1, the latter being connected to a battery 14 and being actuated either by means of a key 18, Fig. 4, provided for locking at least one of the front doors of the vehicle or by a control member 46 (Fig. 4) located within the vehicle. According to the direction of the current each coil 5 is attracted or repelled by the disc 2, Figs. 1 and 2, and is repelled or attracted by the disc 3 so that the shaft 7 is moved to fasten or unfasten the doors. When the key 18 is rotated the member 16 is pivoted to its locking or unlocking position according to the direction of rotation of the key. A heel 30, Fig. 3, of the member 16 engages a projection 31 which is integral with a shaft 34 of the switch 33, and a lever 32 is tilted to a position 32c or 32d, Fig. 7, to close the electrical circuit. At the end of movement of the member 16, the projection 31 disengages from the heel 30, the shaft 34 is returned to its inoperative position by a spring 36, Fig. 5, and the coils 5 are de-energised. An inertia switch 48, Fig. 1, is provided and closes automatically when a relatively strong shock is applied to the vehicle so as to energise the coils 5 to produce an unlocking effect.
