摘要：PURPOSE:To perform the recovery of a data set efficiently, by writing data as physical images by securing an extent required to write data in a direct access device. CONSTITUTION:In a volume VOL1, a catalog CTLG is stored, and a data set A is stored by being divided into the extents E1 and E2 of a volume VOL2 and the extent E3 of a volume VOL3. During the backup operation of the data set A, data are read out as physical images and stored on a magnetic tape MT together with the catalog CTLG. When backup data on the tape MT is to be restored in the volumes VOL2 and VOL3, necessary extents are secured directly on the volumes VOL2 and VOL3 on the basis of the catalog information CTLG recorded on the tape MT. Then, the catalog information of the data set is updated on the basis of the data set written later.
