摘要：Disclosed is a method for making electrorheological fluids in which substantially hydrophobic polymeric solid particles are dispersed in a vehicle consisting of an electrically non-conducting fluid, a surface modifying monomer that polymerizes to a polymer that has more hydrophilic reactive groups than the polymeric solid particles is added to the vehicle, the surface modifying monomer is polymerized in the vehicle on the surfaces of the solid polymer particles to form solid polymer particles that have substantially hydrophobic polymer cores and hydrophilic polymer shells around the cores, and a neutralizer that reacts with the hydrophilic reactive groups of the surface modifying monomer is added to the vehicle to increase the surface potential of the polymer shells on which the polar liquid is adsorbed.
